Greetings,

Found this website last night and I think I fell in love. Here is a little background. I apologize if this is not the appropriate place for such a post.

I currently reside in the Province of New Brunswick, born and raised in Saint John...as of last year I moved to Rothesay, NB (few minutes outside of SJ) and with that....the Man Cave was born. Well not really... I now have a designated spot for said Man Cave that Mrs. ElementZ granted myself full creative control. The room does the trick right now but is a very boring cave so far.

I am at work right now but will post up a couple of pictures up this weekend. I do have some visions dancing in my head of what I want that I will include once pictures are up. I'm sure this will be a long process spanning many years due to limited time, funds, and resources.

As alluded to above, I think I fell in love with this site. I am a man who enjoys good drinks with good friends, a juicy game of poker, movies, video games and sports. All my love interests combined in one spot. Just wish I would have stumbled on this site sooner.

Welcome fellow Canucker. Lots of family out there, including SJ and Darlings Island. They used to live in Rothesay, but moved to the island 2 years ago. The island meaning Darlings Island...not THE island. eh.

A very appropriate introduction. Welcome, eh?

Pictures are nice but a floor plain would definitely aid in the design process.

It's pictuuuuuurrrrreee tiiiimmmmmeeee....

The previous owners of this house chose some interesting paint colors as you can see here in the 'before' pictures of the family room in the basement.

My cave is on the other side of that wall. Although it is referred to as a cave, I didn't care for the fact that it was secluded off from the family room where it seemed both rooms had the illusion of being smaller than what they actually are. I planned on taking that wall out but at the last minute I thought I would see what it would look like by only removing half of the wall. I like it...here is some of the progress...oh yea, just one thing...the only tools I have ever used are a hammer and a screwdriver...so I had my stepdad and a buddy do the majority of the work. I helped out and learned a few things along the way.

As a housewarming gift, my step dad built me a bar with some scraps of wood he had laying around. I think he did a pretty good job. A lady at work gave me 2 bar stools for free. I seen similar ones at Home Depot for $129 + tax.

We painted the family room to more of a neutral color to cover the blood red that was down here.

A few more quick tidbits of what I want to do....Where the dart board is now...that is where I will put a Mame cabinet when it's built (who knows when)...the dart board will probably get relegated to the garage.

Going to have a couple of stools for the half wall (not the ones by the bar).

Going to build a poker table and have it set up vertically adjacent to the 12' wall.

Bar is staying as is....want to build a liquor shelf to go on the wall...seen a design before, can't find it now...but it is a 2-tier cubed shelf with built in lights. The light refracts up through the various bottles of booze...looked sharp....

Want to build a straight shelf on the back wall for all of my McFarlane Sport figures.

Going to get a Fatboy (either Team Canada or Montreal Candians to put on the back wall as well...

Thinking of painting the room 3 colors...Red, White, and Blue

He is old school....taught me how to properly kill and cook a porcupine after being lost in the woods.

Any ideas/criticisms as to what I have laid out? Due to limited time/resources/money, I am looking at years away from 100% completion. I am going to sit down and work out a time line of what I want to do.

Personally I'd refrain from looking toward "completion". It seems that man caves are to some men what custom cars/trucks are to others. The project is never truly complete or it becomes something of a bore. The true joy comes not from the use but from the accumulating pieces, performing the labor, sitting amongst the saw dust having a beer.

I think once you get the bulk of the remodel / poker table / mame cab. etc. done, and you get a look and feel for it, all will come together. I wouldn't be concerned with one upping the competition.

Looking good so far, the cut out definitely makes the room look more spacious and wont make you or guests feel like theyre drinking in a closet.

I am not trying to up the competition by any means as this will be a very modest room to me. Some of the pictures on here are amazing and I only hope to be half as good.

On a side note Mrs. ElementZ is not really digging the idea of a mame cabinet but understands that it is my project and hasn't really given me too much static. :)

Better then the Ovechkin McFarlane in the one picture.

Which leads to a joke:

A guy walks into a bar and asks the tender for a "Ovechkin" bar tender says "What an Ovechkin?" the guy calmly looks at the bar tender and says "A white russian without a cup"

False...not a Yankees fan or even a Baseball fan for that matter....it was the previous owners NY decal.

Want to have this logo on the back room..what would be a good color to paint the room to help compliment it?

Painting or sticker on the logo? I think it could be pulled off nicely with a white wall with a red boarder running through the center.

Going to get a fat head and put it on the wall. Size is 3'5"W x 3'2"H

The image on Fathead is slightly different than the above.

Because the logo proper is bordered in white, I'd be really tempted to cut it away from the "Canada" and puck to get rid of that red drop down: cut out the puck (keeping the white) and cut a straight line across the top of "Canada".

In theory, you could paint the wall anything because of the white border. It be easy to just go neutral (white or off-white).

The project is never truly complete or it becomes something of a bore. The true joy comes not from the use but from the accumulating pieces, performing the labor, sitting amongst the saw dust having a beer.

Actually, I'd suggest the opposite: my goal was to full completion and, yes, it did take a few years but the space is livable and hosts family gatherings, poker games, and wicked Guitar Hero jam sessions.

I didn't focus on the "when" of completion but on the "tasks" to get there as they came up. I did my best at each, tried to get it right the first time, and I'm happy with the results and am glad it's all done. Looking at the big picture can be daunting so focus on the immediate but plan for the future.
