Curious to know the best advice others have received.

My poker mentor told me when I was starting to play:

"Jasen, here are the two things I can't teach you enough of:
In low limit, play the cards;
In mid limit play the chips
In high limit / no limit, play the people.

The other thing is this:
When you are in a hand, you either raise or fold. No hand should be called. If your hand isn't worth raising, then fold"

Never had a poker mentor. Just started playing one day. Nobody ever gave me advice, either, except my wife (who's never played poker). Best advice I'd ever heard of anyone getting, & she repeats it every time I leave for a game.

"Have a good time."

When you are in a hand, you either raise or fold. No hand should be called. If your hand isn't worth raising, then fold.

Your buddy there must have been a friend of Sklansky, only Sklansky says it a little different. I think his version is..

"If the hand is worth a call it's worth a raise."

Nope, he never knew Sklansky.
His lesson was fold or raise, don't call.

"Don't put in good money after bad. Staying too long on marginal hands is where players lose most of their money. Don't be afraid to get away from a hand that's gone bad." Whether I follow this advice as often as I should is another question.

But my new personal favorite has to be: "Pair on board - danger sign!"

To quote him exactly, it's:

"Board Pair!!... Danger Sign!!!!!"
