View Full Version : A reliable poker tell that I see on TV

This particular tell may have been discussed before but I am too lazy to do a search.
When a player picks up his chips that he has already bet (or raised) in front of him and throw them forward towards the pot when his bet (or raise) has been called by another player will usually be bluffing. If this happens before the flop (which is always a raise or a re-raise) he has a weak hand.
I don't see this move too much in the live game that I play but I see it on TV a lot (Eli E. does it quite often.)

I've read about this: the throw is often a tell that the player feels his chips will be lost to him whereas if someone bets their chips close, they feel that the chips will be returning to them.
(I realize you're talking about a bet then a toss to help the dealer, but I still think the above may apply).

For example see Scott S. at 8:10:

Sometimes the player will not pick up the chips but he will nudge them forward (which they really don't have to do since those chips are committed the dealer will drag them in.)

This is a reply from the 2+2 thread:
"There is another tell that is very similar to this but is the exact opposite where the person bets and puts it in the middle and puts his hand on top of the stack but does not move it, that is a huge sign of strength.
Dario M. and Daniel N. have both done this on HSP, Dario did this when Gabe K. made fun of him for saying "i bet this one" then kind of pat the brick of bills in front of him. I've seen DN do this a bunch of times too, all with massive hands."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDvRvChdblE
"Exactly at 2:52 when he takes most of his hand off the brick then places it flat on top of it again. I am not searching for DN doing this, I've seen him do it at least twice though and both times DN's hand was completely off the brick and he reached back and kind of patted it with his hand.
I have only seen this happen once live where the guy had 4 big stacks of chips all equal in height and he reached over and placed his palm on top of all of them when he already had bet them. He had top set.
I have not seen anyone do this to 1 single stack of chips for obvious reasons."
Of course in these instances the opponent has not acted yet.

I've seen the a toss into the pot being a sign of strength. Strong-Handed Player (SHP) bets out and get called. The next street comes and SHP cleans up the pot before making his bet... As an alternative, just after the bet is called, the SHP will clean up the pot. SHP wants to make sure everything is in the pot and its clear the amount of the next bet.
This is a home game tell, not a casino game where the dealer will be cleaning up the pot.

Wow, I never even thought of this one. I may actually be guilty of this quite often. Guess I'll have to keep an eye out for it in the future.
