Wow! A 2000 chip set. You need to put them to use in a BYOC event. However, I don't think you need that many denominations. Usually 4 is ideal: 1's, 5's, 25's, and 100's, or substitute 500's for 1's (most suitable combination for BYOC events).

That being said, good quality chips are good investment since they should last a lifetime.

I got a large number of denoms due to the fact that I'm going to be running a 36 person event. I figured it was more cost effective for me to upgrade my existing set, than it would have been to pick up a 2000pc set of some cheapies that I'd only use once.

The chips are a ceramic composite which I believe is made by the Nevada Jack company. They were custom designed by the owner of http://www.holdempokerchips.com (MSPatton) and are available exclusively through his website.

If you are in the market for a higher end set, I would certainly encourage you to check out his site - he has a number of exclusive styles to choose from, and his customer service is second to none.

EDIT: For the record, I didn't order all 2000 at once - I started with a high denom set of 1000 for tourneys at my home. I recently added 500 low denoms for live play, and 500 more large denoms for the tourney I mentioned earlier.

Now, with regards to your set I am not criticizing you. By all means buy the most expensive chips you can afford and are pleasing to you (my philosophy). However, I am sorry but I just don't see why you would need 0.25, 0.50, or 5000 (maybe even 1000) denominations, even for a 36 person event (either cash game or tourney). The 25 and 50 cents are probably not going to be put in use since they could be substituted by $1's and $5's by assigning each dollar in chips to the say 5 cents in real money. The 5000 will probably not be in use either if you have enough lower chips denomination in the 500's.

Let me think about what kind of chips and how many you need for a 36 person event and post it later.

When we do tourneys, our starting stack is $5000 in chips. If you have 10 players @ the table, that's $50k in chips. We have had tourneys that have gone past the 4000/8000 blinds - with $500 chips, that could be quite tedious. I figured it was a way for me to keep the table colored up, and make it easier for some of the dolts that we play with to count.

Here is my blind structure:

Just kinda made sense for the tourney we run here @ the crib.

For the 36 player tourney, everyone is getting 2k in chips, and blinds will start @ 5/10.

EDIT: The reason for the 25c / 50c denoms is cuz the group of players we have doesn't mind dropping $25 at a time for chips to play with - so we run a .25/.50 NL game. Again, trying to take math out of the question by going with chip values. I guess I should mention that the additional 1000 chips I got were "gifts" so to speak - payment for services rendered to a couple of buddies.

Mod, for a limited amount of players, maybe less than 20, your $5000 starting stack structure is fine (although your blind structure increase rate and maybe the time per round are slower than the typical BYOC events). However, if you want to do a 36 player non-rebuy TOURNEY, you might consider the following:

Since you got:
$5* * *x* 300
$25* * x* 300
$100* *x* 500
$500* *x* 300

These 4 chip denominations should suffice.

Give every player a $1000 starting stack ($36000 in play) with blinds starting at 5/10 or maybe 10/20. Each player will receive:

10x$5 (12 of the players will have only 5x$5 since you would need 360 $5 chips and you only have 300), 300 total in $5 chips

6x$25 (the 12 players with only 5x$5 would of course get 7x$25 to balance it out), 228 total in $25 chips

8x$100, 288 total in $100 chips

You will have enough $25 chips to color up the $5 when they are removed since $5x300 is $1500 which equals an additional 60 $25 chips

Of course you will have plenty of $100 to color up since you have 500 of them to start with.

Your 300 $500 will be an overkill for even a 36 player event should you need to color up the $100

For a 36 player CASH game you could do the same thing as far as the initial chip distribution (maybe consider giving everyone only 5x$5 instead of 10). Then each player $1000 in chips on their buy in with a constant blinds of 10/25. Since you don't need to color up you have plenty of $25's, $100's (and if need be) $500 in reserve for rebuys.

As a fair warning on a 36-player CASH event you will probably not have all players wanting to play the same limit. What is the solution when different limit buy ins are offered? Hmm...let me as you this: Do you really want to host a 36 player CASH event and be the sole banker ? (A 36-player TOURNEY will by far be more manageable if it is a non rebuy event) If you still want to host and bank a large CASH event, I will try to come up with a solution.

It's a 36 player tourney - we play cash games @ my house only. Held my first 2 table cash game last night - and hate to say it, but I'll NEVER do a 2 table cash game again. The money turned out OK, but it's so friggin painstaking to make sure everyone has chips when they bust out, and even worse was trying to keep focus on one table when there was a big battle going on @ the other. Bleh!

If you allow a full rebuys (i.e. always a set amount) in you cash game under a certain chip total you could save some time and reduce the possibility of mistakes by putting the precounted rebuys in sandwich bags (I think Doc and Daddy used it so I want to give credit where credit's due). That way the player who wants rebuy can hand you the money and you can hand him/her the baggy. Also, let someone else deal when you are making rebuy transactions.

The tourney is a charity deal for one of the schools up here. It's a $100 buy in, top 3 (yikes) spots paid out, and 50% of the $$$ goes to the charity. If you are seriously interested, I have the rules n shit online somewhere. It's Feb 20th (Sunday) in Cameron Park. It's gonna be held at a bar called BB Wolfes, which will be closed to the public on Sunday. All kinds of legit :)

I really like the suggestion about having the chip amounts pre-counted. I was actually thinking about that (something similar) but that was after our live game. And yah, had someone else dealing when the rebuys were taking place - that's the only way to ensure there ain't too many hands in teh kitty :)

The cash games we play are low stakes, as we are all pretty much have families n such - but love to play. So they're 0.25/0.50 blinds, and $25 buy in. Can reload once you're down to $6, but I might raise that a little bit.

Let me know when you are hosting a game with $50 buy in and up. The BYOC cash games with $50 you get $1000 in chips and blinds are $10/$25 which is $0.50/$1.25.

Ok, I have to ask - just because someone has a large number of chips, what unwritten rule says they have to use them all the time? For me, I'm a chip addict. I can't (and never will) have enough. For now, I'm content, but I know in the future, I'm gonna end up getting more. Do I need them? No. Do I WANT them? I most likely will. But I will not regret purchasing them.

It's kinda like buying a Vette or something - sure the speedo says 180 or whatever - but the fastest you'll be able to legally drive would be around 65-70mph. So why to ppl buy cars like Vettes n such? Because they're bad ass, and they love cars.

For me, I have a very large amount of flexibility. If I wanna run a $10k tourney for 10 people, I can do it. If I wanna run a .25c/.50c game for 4 people, I can do it. If I wanna run a $2k tourney for 36 people - I can do it. I like knowing that I have enough chips that I'll never have to worry about running out.

As far as the chips go, I want 2K in that set. Gives me the oipportunity to run a high dollar game, low dollar game and a tourney, all with the same set.

Oh man - my garage was the WORST dude!! In fact, I sold an 8' pool table for $250 just to get RID of it. LOL!

If anyone is interested, I have the following things I'd like to get rid of (can provide pix later if anyone wants em):

1. RedBull beverage barrel - like the ones in the convienence stores. It's refrigerated - enough to keep cold drinks cold, but not enough to cool down warm drinks in a timely manner. Might be good for summertime pool parties or something.

2. Hand Carved Chess Set from Mexico - meh - that's what the told me when it was given to me. I've never used it. The board is pretty cool, but the pieces look - er - well - mexican. I'm a fan of the Staunton sets, so never used this one.

3. On-road electric RC car. It's an Associated TC3. You can see pix here: http://www.modfather.org/RC/TC3 and http://www.modfather.org/RC/TC3_v2. It is pretty much RTR. I bought the ESC for it, but have never powered it up. There is currently no motor in it. Have some extra parts with it, including some differential rebuild parts (the front diff needs some attention methinks). If you are interested in this, I can provide a full list of parts n junk with it.

I have more junk that that, but don't wanna turn this forum into eBay :D
