View Full Version : Storing Tires

Long story short: lost my regular tire storage locale so I'll be keeping them in the garage from now on.
I'm tempted to just throw down a bit of plywood (get them off the concrete) and stack 'em up but the web has conflicting views on that; some say vertical is better (requiring some sort of storage rack) while others use tire stands (not applicable; I'm storing without rims). I doubt hanging them from hooks is good as they'd probably deform.
Suggestions?

Are you talking tires only or are they both tires/rims?

Oops somehow read over that part :p
Since it's just the tires, you could probably just stack them and put some sort of cover over them.

I did notice crappy tire has a decent looking tire rack but it's $130. I think you could probably build something out of 2x4s. I have separate rims for my winter tires for my truck, so am kind of looking for a solution as well. My garage leaks like a sieve so don't really want to store them in there. When I get my basement finished, I think I will build something to mount on the wall...kind of like what this guy did.

Why for the cover?
Isn't having them out of sunlight and exposure to elements enough?

Would keep the kids from using them as a tire fort :)

store them on a rack, just as tire shops do.
Have them on the wall. You could build something easily enough with some 2X4s'

Yeah, then fab something up.
10 buck worth of tubing. I've build several from my racing days.
Takes no time and easy to drop a few lab bolts into the wall and hang it up out of the way.

No, I just had a race shop and had the same issue. We'd store 20 or so tires. And with very little fab work and materials, you can build something very easily and save the 300 buck someone else charges.
yes. pretty much.

So when you're winter tires are on, you'll be storing your summer tires and vice-versa (i.e., there will always be a set of tires on the rack)?
If it won't be used during a certain season, a couple of hinges and that thing will fold up out of the way when not is use.

Angle iron is going to be a lot easier/cheaper and this style is just what I like: simple and effective. I've talked with my nephew tonight and he can probably get it even cheaper so the ball is now rolling. Will share results.
...
Figured I may as well hi-jack my own thread here...
Ordered the all-seasons for my car and got a deal on new all terrains for the wifey's 4x4. After getting the totals, the costs didn't quite add up with my math. Not a lot but enough to notice. I discovered they were adding in a nitrogen fill.
No, thank you. I was "reminded" that nitrogen is soooOOOooo much better for me because of better milage and air leak issues. Yeah. Whatever.
I read up on all of this when I got the car some years back and I can't believe people fall for this. They probably also buy $150 Monster Cables...

Nitrogen is *GREAT* for tires..... RACE CAR tires......
It does absolutely nothing for a street car.
And no, it doesn't prevent leaks, nor does it change gas mileage.
What it does do is not expand and increase pressure as the tire gets warmer or hot by way of driving. However on a street tire, you can't get it hot enough to make more than a difference of 2 or 3 pounds (psi). In racing applications, you cook the tire to the toasty side of 200*, where in nitrogen is useful to control inflation pressure.
So, good catch. Don't let them sell you tire snake oil.

I remember when I was buying the car and the nitrogen "benefits" were being touted and my inner-geek kicked in... air is like 75% nitrogen... I doubt I lose *any* appreciable air *through* the tire membrane itself... the car has a pressure monitoring system... and I look at my damn tires every time I walk up to the car! Hell, I point out everyone *else's* low tires every chance I get!
Furrfu.
Some info I came across that is less hyperbole and more fact:
1) Consumer Reports: Nitrogen air loss study (http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/10/tires-nitrogen-.html)
2) Consumer Reports: Q&A (http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/10/nitrogen-tires-.html)

And you're geek enough to go figure out the molecular structure and size between oxygen and nitrogen and see that there is +/-3ish% difference between the two. IIRC. So the whole "leaking out through the tire" theory doesn't float. And the test of "fill your tires now, check 'em in a year" isn't a practical test either as that's not a real world scenario.
You get the gist.

If you simply stack them for a long period of time it will flatten the sidewalls and ruin the tires

Back on track here...
After some family distractions and flood preparations, my nephew got around to welding up the angle iron for me and dropped it off. This was about $25 worth of metal that was just laying around and in great shape.
The back bottom bar is not welded. I'll drill holes along the inside edge of the frame to make it adjustable.

I'm picking up some 3" lag screws and 1" washers tonight to mount it to the studs. I'll show pictures of that and the tires on board when it's done.
Naturally, I had to paint it first... care to take a guess?

Drilled the angle iron -- spent more time cleaning up the shavings, I bet -- and hung it from three lag screws. I'd have done another two at the bottom corners but the kid didn't build it entirely square.

If you're building yours to the same width, be aware that you're seeing four tires here: there's lots of space left but not enough for another set.

Actually, in hindsight, I bet it would hold two sets if I packed it: they're just shoved up there. Testing/measuring will be done some evening.
But I don't run winters on the truck anyway as they've got a pretty aggressive tread to begin with.

Na, even tightened up against each other and the edge of the rack it's over the halfway mark, but just by a few inches.
I didn't really plan for two sets anyway so I never bothered to determine the max width. Good 'nuff.
