Consumers are used to paying $60 each for videogames that run on consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now the publisher behind the industry's biggest videogame franchise— "Call of Duty"—is about to find out whether it can get them to pay a monthly bill, too.

Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Activision executives said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix Inc. movie subscription. Portions of the service will be free, including features inspired by Facebook Inc. that will let "Call of Duty" players meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests.

Another feature of the service will give "Call of Duty" players tools, modeled on those from stock-trading websites, to analyze their performance within the game, gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies.

The plan—which comes a week ahead of the videogame industry's big E3 trade show in Los Angeles—is a potentially risky bet by Activision that it can further milk profits from consumers, who could feel the $60 they spend on "Call of Duty" in stores is enough. Charging a monthly subscription fee is more common for multiplayer games that run on personal computers. The most successful of those is "World of Warcraft," a fantasy game from Activision's Blizzard division that has over 11 million subscribers, who typically pay $15 a month for the service.

For players with a Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360 console, a Call of Duty Elite subscription will come on top of the $9.99 monthly fee they typically pay for Xbox Live, the online game service that provides players of all Xbox games to meet and compete against others online. Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 console owners don't pay a monthly fee to play against others online.

The PlayStation Network that provides those multiplayer capabilities recently suffered an outage of more than three weeks after a hacker intrusion on the service. Players of PC versions of "Call of Duty" don't pay to play others online.

In an interview, Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said he isn't worried about pushback from gamers about the Call of Duty Elite fee because players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service. While he is coy about many of the offerings that will be included in the service, Mr. Kotick said Call of Duty Elite, and the customer-service operation that will be needed to support it, wouldn't be possible if the service was free. "This is an enormous investment," he said.

"Call of Duty" is in a unique position to seek a monthly fee from customers. The game's previous installment, set during the Cold War and called "Call of Duty: Black Ops," was the best-selling game last year, with global retail sales of more than $1 billion during its first six weeks on shelves.

Since Activision first began publishing the series almost eight years ago, it has accounted for more than $3 billion in retail sales, according to the company. Unlike hit movies, new versions of "Call of Duty" come out every year, with "Modern Warfare 3" due to arrive in stores Nov. 8.

"It's probably the biggest entertainment franchise in the world," said Dennis Durkin, corporate vice president in Microsoft's interactive-entertainment business.

Just as important is the degree to which "Call of Duty" has become the biggest online-game hit on consoles. While many gamers still play the old-fashioned way—by themselves against enemies operated by the game itself—"Call of Duty" has been the most successful console game at getting players to battle other human-operated opponents over the Internet.

Jamie Berger, Activision's vice president of digital for "Call of Duty," said the company has about seven million daily players of the game who spend, on average, about seven full days a year playing the game against others online. Players often use headsets to communicate verbally with other online gamers.

Like other publishers, Activision has earned money selling "Call of Duty" map packs and other digital content for one-time charges, but subscriptions to its new service could give it a continuing way to capitalize on the online popularity of the game.

Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations at Sony's U.S. games division, said only a few games have the audience loyalty and size to support a subscription service like Call of Duty Elite. Mr. Dyer said he is "very confident" other publishers will follow Activision's lead. "There's money to be made there," he said.

This has bad news written all over it. Pay-to-play on a console is a terrible model IMO. Asshat doesn't expect much pushback over this? I highly doubt it.

If he's gonna release a gimped release to retail, he damm well better lower the price to buy it. Activision are pure bastards.

And IIRC, Battlefield 3 is beign released the same day... I haven't played BF2, but I had heard that it was better than MW2... This might be enough to get me to consider a rival's title...

I don't want the free lite version of online play. I understand its a huge capital investment to run it all, but Keerist! you sell the disk for $60 each. When you check the number of people online playing the title at any one time, there's like $6m worth of disks sold. And that's just the people online at that snapshot of time...

I agree. No fucking way I'm paying more to play online that what I already am.

I've been leaning towards BF3 anyways. If MW3 adapts a monthly fee that will be the nail in the coffin.

I don't purchase any games until I read several reviews on them (IGN and a few other sites).

some highlights

The biggest new addition to the game that we’ve heard of so far is the creation of Team Perks. These are perks that a team, can work toward to earn. It is unclear whether this will be tied to clans or some other team system, but their inclusion could help push the game into a more team driven title, something the premium Elite service is likely to tie into.

While we don’t know the total number of team perks coming to Modern Warfare 3, we have been told four of them:

Stopping Power: Increased bullet damage.
Blast Shield: Unclear
Health Regen: Regenerate health over time.
Stun Protection: Prevent stunning from flash grenades.

We’re not clear on how many or which previous perks will be coming to the game, but it sounds like the ones that do return will do some from Modern Warfare 2, not Black Ops.

There will also be a bevy of new killstreaks to play with in multiplayer. Here’s the rundown on the latest thinking:

EMP Grenade: Temporarily takes out all area electronics.
Littlebird: A tiny remote-controlled helicopter.
Precision Airstrike: Calls in an airstrike on a targeted area.
Stealth bomber: Calls in a B2 Spirit to carpet bomb along a line designated by the player.
Remote Turret: A remote-controlled turret.
Directional UAV: A UAV that can be directed into areas to scan for enemies.
Remote Mortar: Direct a mortar team using a zoomable camera view of the map to call in strikes.
Airdrop Trap: A booby-trapped airdrop.
Ammo Resupply: An ammo reloading airdrop.
Escort Airdrop: A protected airdrop.
Specialist Strike Package: This one remains a mystery to us.

While it’s likely that some of the killstreaks will drop out or be added in, we’ve been told that the team has decided to remove the controversial Tactical Nuke killstreak from the game.

Woot has a sweet deal (today only) on a refrubed Turtle Beach wireless X41 headset. $85 out the door. These are digital RF and Dolby 7.1. It still requires a cable to go from the headset to the controller for chatting, but game audio is 100% wireless.

I think I have the 31's. They were $100 new.

Yes, there is a HC mode. You can't access it until like level 16 or something.

No HCHQ Pro. Yet.

Yes there are noob tubes.

The thing I like most is the ability to change the reticle. I really only used the M4 and the M16. Also, in confirm kill mode (or whatever its called -- the one where you hafta collect dog tags), it gives you two maps to choose from and the lobby votes. Most votes is the map you play. Nice touch.

Played mostly TDM. Started out playing with TheGame. He bailed on me...dunno why. Then, when it got to be 12am PT, Kdizz and West got the game. Played a couple more hours with them. Around 5am, I fell asleep between games. Sad, rite?

Taking the boy out to dinner for his birfday after work. Should be on around 9 or 10 my time. So 6 or 7 your time.

You know, it really had a BOps feel to it. I didn't play BOps that much, but it reminded me alot of that. Maybe TheGame can comment on it more, as he was more of a BOps player. But from the menus to the maps, it seemed BOps-ish. But the guns/lag/etc. were executed better than BOps, IMO.

You gotta constantly check your corners. And there's a perk that allows you to move normal speed while aimed in. That's nice.

Also, a death streak perk that shows you exactly where the guy that killed you is (for like 10 seconds or something). So you can go right back and kill him.

Picking my preorder up after work today. I usually go in on these types of game purchases with my kids but I give them first crack at playing it. I get it after their bedtime :mrgreen:

Was please to read this little bit about Local Co-Op. I enjoy playing the FPS with my kids in splitscreen but find that a lot of recent games do not have splitscreen play modes. I got left high and dry with Battlefield 3.

But I did find this on Co-Op:

First, to be clear, Modern Warfare 3 does NOT have a co-op campaign. You can not play the game's story mode with friends at all. The only CoD game to date to support this feature was Call of Duty: World at War, and sadly, no other title has replicated it.

Instead Modern Warfare 3 features two co-op modes, both listed under the name of Spec-Ops.

Spec Ops Missions

Spec-Ops missions are similar to what was available in Modern Warfare 2. Two players team up to play through a scenario against AI opponents. While Modern Warfare 2's missions were taken as snapshots from the single player campaign, Modern Warfare 3's Spec-Ops missions were designed from the ground up for co-op.

Spec Ops Survival

New this year is a mode called Survival in which two players face off against waves of increasingly difficult enemies. In between rounds you'll resupply, buy upgrades and perks, and plan your strategy with your co-op buddy. These matches take place on subsets of the multiplayer versus maps and have no end game. That is - you simply play as long as you possibly can. At E3 this year we managed to make it till wave 24.

The entirety of Spec-Ops is playable in both local split-screen, online and LAN play. Modern Warfare 3 does not contain the same "Combat Training" mode as Black Ops did to play the game's versus modes against AI bots.

Remember - Modern Warfare 3's team based versus modes are NOT Co-Op. Here is the definition of a co-op game.

What is a co-op game?

A co-op game is a game where two or more players work together to accomplish a goal against AI opponents. Ideally the game will feature a strong story in which all players take part of. Co-Op can be online over the internet, offline on the same console, or via a LAN or Wireless Network. We do not consider team based games as co-op where players face off against another team of human players.

So we're back to Special Forces Co-op Co-op. I can live with that. And Survival mode looks like a good replacement for the Combat Training AI Bot slaughterhouse we loved to play in BlackOps although I rarely survive :) Zombie nightmares all over again.

The game is very black ops-ish in terms of the feel, play, game lobbies, perks, etc. definitely love the perk to see where the guy who killed you was. FUCK YOU CAMPERS!

Played it last night with the kid trying each part of the game out.

SpecOps was fun and SpecOps Survival was just like Zombies but with none zombies. We loved it.

Played some online split screen multiplayer. Glad we can do that on one live account. The second player is the normal online Guest but at least you can get more than one person in a multiplayer online match. And, like predicted, I got spawn camped for the whole 5 minutes we played online. Spawn, run 10 feet, dead. This is why I don't play online. Still debating whether to pay the extra $50 for Elite for him.

I played campaign after he went to bed. Got to Act II, 2nd mission before I was done for the night. Is it me or are they throwing a lot of enemy our way?

All in all, IMO, it plays just like the previous version and I'm not complaining.

i liked it. servers sucked last night, but that's to be expected for a launch.

like wedge said, it definitely has the black ops feel to it... just with better graphics.

also is more like a $60 map pack or "MW 2.5" as i've seen it described on other sites. i like the fact you can rank up your weapon and it gets better as it ranks up.... however it seems like its taking longer to level up as far as rank.

don'tlike that these games launch with no hardcore headquarter riccochet though....and i know that Oz hates it because i kept team killing him last night HAHAHAHA.

A couple of the maps were cool. Haven't really found a good sniping map, which i am fond of, nor a "rust" type of map where its just utter chaos the entire time.

I'm still a little confused on the various kill streak types... need to read up on that more but there are some pretty bad ass kill streaks: assault drone is sweet for a small map. the reaper is bad ass as well.

Graphics are good! Weapons set up is good. I like the customization you can get with experience on each gun - looking forward to more of that!

Game choices BLOW DONKEY DICKS! Give me HC Richochet and all will be great.

I love the reviews over at that link. 90% are from before the game was released. The current ones pretty much say the same thing ... it's the same as MW2 with some small changes.

Oh - no - I disagree about it being MW2 with some small changes. More like Black Ops with a MW2 feel.

I'm only a wee bit into campaign (20%) and have played maybe five matches online but it's definitely familiar territory.

The campaign is rather dull so far, especially the linear tact it forces. I doubt it will get much replay.

One thing I actually enjoyed: the MW3 full length commercial. Had a laugh.

Hmm... I started the campaign yesterday and thought it was pretty sweet. I've learned to start campaigns on the hardened level (if you start on regular, you just have to go back and do it again on hardened anyway to get all the achievements) so maybe that's why I like it and you don't (dunno what level you started on).

Taking back NY and the sweep of the sub was a blast!

Fun game. Finished campaign. Going back when I get the time and replay at a higher level. Don't want to spoil any surprises or missions but I am happy with this game. Had "things" in it I wanted to play that were in the others. Sometimes confusing to play as a different person during the levels just like the previous versions.

Allright, I have to agree just a bit. Black Ops sucked balls! Graphics were horrible, game play was shitty, the whole play was shitty! But there were a few cool things they did right.

OK. Yes, the graphics are better in MW3, and there are a few problems with the game (not even a week old yet - they will fix the flaws), but it is more than just a map pack upgrade. Sure, it has the feel of BO, but with a lot better play - which to me is 1000x better than just a new map pack / gun upgrade!

And to the other yahoo's that chimed in --- phq17 --- add that name to your list - you play against it - you're gonna die (A LOT). Better to be on the same side!

I started the campaign last night. I've never played any of the Call of Duty games. I was always more of a PC first person gamer because I couldn't make the transition to controller from keyboard and mouse. On the PC, I'll fuck you up. As it stands on the Xbox, I'm fucking retarded. I started the campaign on Hardened. That's only from past installments where I pay it on Normal (because I want to get through it) only to see that half the achievements require you to complete them on Hardened or Veteran.

As for online/MP, I think Hardcore is actually easier. Less hit markers/more damage (targets go down easier). Plus, there is no radar up all the time... Easier to stay hidden from opponents. When I switch back to regular mode, I constantly find myself putting a couple rounds in a target expecting him to be dead; as I turn and go on to the next target, I get shot in the side/back by the person I thought I put down.

This is now my go-to game for winding down in the wee hours after hockey or such. Combat Training in the last CoD was fun but this is far better.

It's this kind of solo practice that is key (for me) to trying out weapons, learning the maps, and ultimately enjoying multiplayer more.

1. If you don't, you get called a pussy. Ask RounderWannabe.

B. You get a "Presteige Token" every time you do, which gives you the ability to keep a weapon unlocked or gives you two hours of double XP time, etc...

4. Once a made level 70 10th Prestige on MW2, it felt like there was nothing to play for and points didn't matter. I'd feel like that if I stopped at level 80 with no Prestiges...

Two new DLC maps are cool... There are small, with lots of places to hide, but all of them always exposed on a couple of sides... Price (free) makes it worth it.

I agree it would be much more fun with someone you know on your team, even better as 2v2 with 3 other people you know...
