What's the easiest way to extract movies from my Direct TV DVR? I have about 20 flicks on there I'd like to migrate to the HTPC or at least have on HDD to spool from my laptop, etc.

The way I've done this in the past is record it with my DVR (disc), which requires watching / playing it all the way through to record it.
Then rip the DVD on my laptop / machine to get it in soft copy. Rinse, repeat for 20 some odd flicks.

There's gotta be an easier way.

Beuler?

Yeah, it's just a PITA to do it that way. There's ethernet port, USB, and other's on the back, so I gotta think there's a hack out there and I'm not the first to ax how to do this.

It's just a hard drive inside the DVR... I'm pretty sure you could take it out, image what you need and pop it back in.

I have a DISH Network DVR. In order to transfer files from it to an external hard drive or other device, Dish charges $40 to activate the USB connection for that unit; I have 2 of them.

I'd guess DirecTV is the same. Are you trying to find a way around this?

no, I don't even know if it's an option with DTV. IF it is, I'll consider paying it, depending on the format and such that I get the files from. However...... if there is an "unlock" that Direct TV will sell me... you know.... for the DVR that I own.... then I'm more inclined to support the creativity of free enterprise.

Get a capture card for the HTPC.
Run the DTV DVR box into the capture card then out to your tv
Play and capture.

Try it. Thats how I am going to work it this weekend. I hope. From reading online, looks like it will.

The problem is, or questions, is what kind of quality is that? HD?

My understanding, and remember I am just getting into this so this is just what I have read,
if it is HD content, and you have an HD capable capture card, it will be HD content.

My plan is to eventually have all 3 tuners in the basement of my home outputting directly into my htpc. Tuners are controlled via an IR signal converter. The HTPC will be networked into my home gigabit speed network and sent to rj45 drops next to each tv. From there, the ethernet line travels into a micor-pc type device which outputs it via HDMI/composite/s-video.
