Title: American (The Bill Hicks Story)

Subject: Probably the greatest comic of the last 100 years, William Melvin Hicks

Review: After watching this movie twice recently, I feel I can't do it justice in this review. The movie was phenominal in a documentary way. It follows the rise of Bill Hicks as a comedian, his fall, and his powerful return to the top of his game. It is told through the eyes of 10 of his closest friends. Not a ton of people who kind of knew him, but his best friends and family. Archival footage is used, and animated stills, A la motion comics, are used for storytelling.

The movie is just beautiful in expressing what an intelligent and hard thinking wit Bill Hicks was through his whole life. His open mindedness and ability to make you think while you laughed your ass off was shown throughout the film. From starting in comedy at 15 years old through his first rise to fame, his drug induced fall from grace, his sobriety and subsequent return to form as a thinking man's comedian.

He wasn't a tits and dick humorist, but he could reach anyone with his jokes. Sometimes bitter in his voice, he seemed to be grounded by family, friends, and a thirst for just learning and trying everything.

I really can not say one bad thing about this film. The crew nailed it without missing a line.

Score: A Perfect Swanky.

Recommended: To adults and older teens. It paints an amazing portrait of Bill Hicks. Enjoy it and watch it again to pick up more things.
