First of all...

I've been following PMC for a while now. I really appreciate everything you have put together on this site.

Question:

My regular home game is coming up again in a few weeks, and we are always on the lookout for something outside the norm. We play dealers choice, so things can range from typical NLHE, to PLO, to 7-Stud.

We also like to throw in some unusual ante games to keep it interesting. We play a modified version of 8-Card Guts, and a game that one of the guys calls "Nuggetry", which alternates from best low, to best high, and ends with the winner also having to beat a dummy hand in the center of the table.

I have found a few things on the interwebs, but I thought I'd ask you PMC'ers if you have any games you throw in to mix it up.

Thanks.

You want action?

Pineapple, Crazy Pineapple, Shanghai, Tahoe.

What about a kill game?

I definitely agree that Pineapple and ESPECIALLY Crazy Pineapple get things going.

We also played Badugi one night. It's not too complicated, and fun, but if I remember right, it's more of a luck game than a skill game.

Don't forget about the 7 card stud games. High/Low Chicago, etc.

When I'm not playing poker with PMC brethren (who I'm lucky to get to venture outside of NLHE) we like to play Omaha in regular and hi-lo versions in a "double bed" format. This is simply two flops, turns and rivers where you pick your bed at showdown. After some booze we play double bed "connectors" where you can use ANY 3 cards that are touching plus 2 from your hole cards to make your hand. We have also added the "reacharound" option at times where you can use 1 or 2 cards from each end of the beds to wrap around to 1 or 2 cards on either bed's other end. Naturally these games create tons of action and lots of miscalled hands but I enjoy them anyway.

We also enjoy a version of 3 card poker where you can not check and cards are dealt and bet on one at time. This is played in a limit format.

We played position poker at our last tournament. It's a kill game without a kill blind.

If you are playing a cash game, just make it a kill game.

Also, a pink chip game will get action flowing.

We had a home game for years that we never played Texas Hold' Em at. One game that was always fun and rang up some decent size pots was 727.

727
The goal is to get cards totalling as close to 7 as possible without going over, or as close to 27 as possible without going over. Cards count equal to their value. Face cards are worth 1/2 point. Aces are worth 1 or 11. A player with more than 27 points is busted and must fold.

Each player antes to start. The betting is fixed at the amount of the ante, which we will call X.

Each player is dealt one card face down. Starting with the player to the dealer's left, a player has the option to take a card, which is dealt face up in front of them. After taking or not taking a card, they have the option to bet or pass. If they bet, ALL players still in the game must place X in the pot. If a player passes, the deal move to the left.

Play continues until an entire round, ending with the dealer, takes place where no one takes a card (this does give the dealer the advantage of being able to control the length of the game.)

Once play has concluded, players must declare simultaneously whether they are going for 7, 27, or both (see High-Low Splits rules). A player could conceivably go for both based on the Aces - a hand holding two Aces and other cards totalling 5 could have both 7 and 27 simultaneously. The pot is split into two purses, one half going to the person closest to 7, the other the closest to 27. In the event of a tie for a purse, the purse is further subdivided among the tying players.

fuck yeah..... 727 is the nuts.
you can easily bust people with a few rounds of that though.

Thanks for all of the responses. I've always wanted to try the pineapple games. I think we'll give them a try this time around.

Many thanks to monkey_booger for the PMs with all of those ideas.

I might have to host a game more often just to fit in all of these variations. That would be a shame, now wouldn't it... ;)

13-33 with 2 cards down...same as 727 but the 2 cards down makes it bit harder to figure out if someone going hi or lo...

Favorites in our game:
5-stud hi/lo split
5-draw hi/lo split, roll 'em back (reveal one card at a time/round of betting)

I don't know if it has an actual name, but we call it 7-Card Super Omaha. Must be 6 people or less

Deal everyone 7 cards, fold one immediately, bet

Flop, everyone folds another card, bet

Turn, everyone folds a card, bet

River, play your 4 card Omaha Hand.

Needless to say, there's quite a bit of action. Not much skill, but its fun. Plus, we usually slow roll each other when possible.

W, 7 card Super Omaha sounds pretty cool. Position poker also sounds like a motherfucking winner! Need a button that reads, "Winna!"

727 is a blast.

However if you just want more action, I'm with wedge and play kill.

LOL, well played sir.

X2 on 727, lots of fun.

We also used to play Iron Cross in our post-tourney cash games. Those got to be big pots.

All I can say about 727 is... WOW! I think we played that more than any other game. We also mixed in some pineapple, Chicago, and some kill games. The kill games didn't go over too well, but 727 is a new favorite.

Thanks.
