Hey guys, i've been a fan of the site for a while but just recently signed up.
So this is my first table build... really the first time working with wood other than taking something apart or building something outside.
I'll throw a couple of the finished pics up.
This table was only 6 feet long + rail, and based off the Junell model.
I wanted it a bit smaller so it would be easier for home games.

What are your thoughts on the best types of playing cards?

There are two. And once you get down to those two.. IMO is a Ford v. Chevy argument.
KEM or Copag are those two.
Yes, there are other very nice cards out there, Modiano, J, etc. but IMO, KEM's and Copags are pretty much the standard. There's also cheep enough, and common enough to get replacements, or like decks so if you play a lot, you can boneyard a deck, and then pull new (replacement) cards out if it for a deck that you keep playing with.
Versus buying some superbadass cards, getting a crimp in one of them, and having to shitcan the entire deck because you don't have / can't get a replacement.

Affordable and get the job done? Copags.
Want a little thicker card? Modianos.
No need to look elsewhere.
EDIT: IMO, KEMs are too soft, and too expensive. You can get Mods for the same price as Copags if you keep your eyes open. I prefer those two over just about everything else out there. Copags are a little thinner and are noticable when transitioning from a paper deck. Not a big deal, but noticeable.

Dal Negro > everything else

Here we go.....
OK, so the official list of bad ass cards is KEM, Copag, Del Negro and Modiano.
Serious though. Both Del Negro and Modiano are very nice cards. But see my issue if bonyarding a deck if you play a lot or if your players crease cards a lot.

didn't mean to cause a card battle here hah,
i think i'll go with the copags.. i like the idea of being able to replace with no problem..
I'm still torn on chips, i host a regular cash card game about 3-4 times a month... and i kind of want to go the custom route. I don't know though, so many options.

You *must* go the custom route.
Serious. Throw some ideas around and a few of the peeps in the forum will do all the artwork for you in exchange for some wife / girlfriend pics.
Look at a few of the custom chip threads and get some ideas going.
Or... shit... look at the special that Gene is having right now on the new Nevada Jacks. For the price, and the looks, they can't be beat.

Check around at a couple of different smoke shops or gaming stores. You might find them, but you'll pay a premium.

Dal Negro, IMO, require cleaning too often. Maybe I just need cleaner friends. Good cards, though.
No opinion on NTP's.
Modiano - solid, thicker card. Durable. Can't go wrong.
Fournier - Very good cards, but unless you find them on sale, they are pricey.
KEM - Too soft. Cards bow easily, and are susceptible to nicks/dings/creases. KEM has an awesome replacement policy on their new cards. Long thought of as the gold standard by many, but just not my cup of tea.
Copag - Durable as hell, but feel a little thinner and take some getting used to. Never overly impressed witht he back designs, but a solid, affordable performer.
I've never had an issue of any kind with Modiano or Copag. Others, I've have various issues. JMHO. YMMW. FRO.

On yeah, and Caragail's charges $2 to ship, and shipping is free over $50 (http://caragails.com/shipping.htm).
Go get some Copag 1546's (http://caragails.com/copag1.htm). I think everyone starts with 1546's.
If it was me, I'd go straight for the Modiano Beehive (http://caragails.com/modiano2.htm). $17 + shipping ($1 more than 1546's). Solid cards. Only wish they came in more colors so I could run them on multiple tables. They are bridge size, which I prefer, but some prefer poker width.
Alex at Trident is a solid choice too, but his selection is too stagnant over the last few years, IMO.
Looks like Jeff is closed until 11/12. So if you want them now, go to Trident. If you need time to decide, go Caragail's.

How's about 500 Skulls? NR 1-day auction on ebay. See Gene's post here (http://perfectmancave.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31798).
EDIT: Wow. Was $26 earlier this afternoon... Over $100 already.

Honestly if I were in the market for chips, I'd go with those new Nevada Jacks he has on sale right now. Not the old version, but the new one.

Wal-Greens sells Bicycle Prestige Plastic cards on the cheap, sometimes a BOGO for <$20. They feel like paper cards, and are readily available. I am a bit of a card snob. I've had Modianos. Great cards, a little hard on the hands if you're constantly shuffling, but durable as hell. Copags are a good workhorse for your first set. Davincis are great too. My all time faves are Zero cards from Italy, but those are next to impossible to get. Fourniers and Dalnegros also are good.
Agree with Wedge on KEMS. I can't stand KEMs. They start to warp after a little while, and just feel cheap after a couple uses.
