Got up to JR about 4:30 not sure what to expect regarding their temp. relocation and fewer tables. Not to worry, they're well behind schedule and still upstairs. I found one 1/2, one 2/5 and one 3/6 in progress. "You wanna play 3/6 while you're waiting?" No thanks, I didn't bring a fork to stick in my eye.
Waited about 30 miutes to get seated in the 1/2 game, got a little scouting report. 3 familliar faces in the game: Rat from a few sessions ago, the kid who really steamed me (same session, much later) and another kid who's a little tricky, but not a big problem; reasonably solid. All others were new faces. I got seated to the right of Rat (not my preferred position on this guy) and the steamer kid was few seats to Rat's left (again, not by preference). I sat right in the BB and got 65. OK, I'll take that in a limped pot. Flop came AQ6 and was checked around. Turn was an under card, but I still checked. Rat bet $10. Could easily just be a buy, so I gave hime some action. River was another blank. Rat bet another $10. 50/50 that he had a Q, so I called, "show me". He had it, "NH, I really didn't want that $20 anyway..."
So I'm $20 in the hole right off the bat. No biggie, showed a little splash. 4 or 5 hands later, I hooked up with AA and did my standard raise to $12. Rat calls "I gotta give you more money?" He laughed and said "We'll see, I'm running warm right now." Just what I wanted to hear. Flop was T82, I bet the pot and he called (others cleared out). Turn brought a 2, which I really didn't care for but "If you got the deuce, so be it. All-in" for another ~$45. He paused and considered it a bit and eventually flipped up Q9 for an open ender. "You want a call?" "Do what you gotta do." He finally called and my AA held up when the river paired the T. Felt a bit miraculous, but I manged to climb ahead a little.
A few orbits later, another guy I've played with before sat down between Rat and Steamer. He looks and plays like a dufus so I've hung a "Gomer" nick around his neck. I'm in the BB with AQ, Gomer popped the pot and I called. Flop came Q high and I fired at the pot. He just called. (He thinks he's tricky, but he usually just tricks himself out of bets.) Turn brought a pretty timid card. I fired another $25 and he raised all-in for ~$50 more. Hmmmmm. I can't put him on an overpair (would have raised the flop) and I just couldn't put him on a set. I thought it over and figured we were probably chopping at worst "Can't get away from this one. Don't really like it, but I gotta call." He flips up KQs (turn brought him a flush draw) and said "That Ace is the last thing I wanted to see." River didn't bring him any help and my AQ held up. Whew. Doged 2 draws.
I was rolling along pretty nicely for a couple hours. No other major confrontations, a few pots here, a few pots there and had my stack up to about $250. Cards started cooling, so I took a dinner break.
Got back from dinner, and pretty much could not drag a pot. I took a couple down on reputation, but the cards really dried up. Waited and waited and waited....Nothing. Bled down to about $120, grabbed a little bit when I managed to push my TT past a flopped Q. Bled a little more and waited.
I finaly landed a KQ (UTG of course) and limped to a K47, 2 club flop. I bet the pot and got one caller, a very solid Asian guy, who had been very quiet most of the night, but knew what to do with cards when he got them. Even though he called, I figured I was still way ahead, my KQ was well disquised since I didn't raise PF. Turn brought a T. I bet the pot again, $50. He acted a little ancy which I wish I really would have paid more attention to, but he just called. KT? Flush draw? WTF is this guy up to? I (for some reason) decided that his anciness was due to making a bad call to chase his flush. River brought another K. Jesus, I have to be golden. I bet another $50, hoping he had a KJ, K9 type of hand and would have to call. Mentally, I'm reaching for the pot really expecting him to pitch his cards when he suddenly raised $50. Shit! WTF does this guy have? "You didn't hook up on a boat on me did you?" Damn it, what have I got myself into? Most of my stack is now in the pot, his raise put me almost in. How can this not be good? I called, still beliving I was ahead, that the second K gave his (assumed) lesser kicker a little more power. He flipped up 44 for a flopped set and rivered boat. Geez. "Nice hand." He played it perfectly and I just happend to have the perfect hand for him to get the most out of it. I don't hink raising PF would have got him off his 4s, so I really can't beat myself up too much for the play of the hand. My only self critique is not paying a little more attention to his reaction to the turn. I managed to funnel my read into what I wanted it to mean instead of paying attention to it. It's hard to believe i would have not called his bet had I checked to him, so betting the river was correct - calling his raise was marginal, but no big regrets - just a terrible spot, that was magnified by the fact that it was the first hand I got to push in the last 2 hours.
So, I'm left with $30 trying to decide if I wanted stack up. The cards weren't really holding my attention and the table wasn't exactly a pushover table. I decided to just get my chips in on the next decent hand and see what happens. Waited a few orbits and finally got KJ (UTG, where else). "Come and get it!" as I dropped my puny stack in the circle. The kid, who had taken the seat Rat vacated was pretty solid and running good. He called without much hesitation. "I'm dead." "Naw, you're probably ahead of me." The rst of the table got out and sure enough, he held AJ. Not only was I behind, but I was severely dominated. What a surprise. Board helped niether of us, so his A held up and I was done. "You kids have fun. I'm out of here."
I left in reasonably good spirits, just mumbling to myself about the "one bad hand" and string of worthless cards. What can you do? Rather than fight it, I felt it best to just leave my rack behind and come back for it another time.
Hope you guys had better success up at DW than I did at JR tonight.
