Im looking at getting a HUGE projection screen in my garage. The problem I have is can I hook up my cable(DIRECTV) to the screen somehow? I dont have a receiver in the garage.

What kind of projector and cables would I need?

This might be a tough question or dumb question. Dont know much about video.....

Most projectors now have DVI/HDMI/Component/Composite input. It's the same output most DirecTv boxes will have. It's just a matter of getting a box, putting it somewhere, and running wires to the projector. You'll still need something to use as sound as well.

I have a projector shooting onto a 12.5' screen in my basement. You can run an HDMI directly to it for video, but to get sound you will need to run wires from your source to a receiver and then to speakers in your garage. It might be a better idea to put an extra DTV box in your garage with a receiver and speakers. One thing you'll need to consider on how big you want to go is whether you'll have enough distance to throw it and make it that big. Mine is sitting about 20' from the screen to get that size. Also look in AVSForums for more info.

What model of directv box do you have, that makes a difference. The good part is that if you have both an HDMI and component out, you can use them both. It really depends on the length of the run but HDMI Peters out at bout 25 feet, especially from my DirecTv HDDVR. You could get an hd splitter that inserts power which makes the signal go farther.

Component goes much further and can still get you an HD signal.

Directv als has an rf remote setting on their dvr that you can use from other rooms.

So, what is the distance, the receiver, and your preferred method of connection?

I have an HD DVR Direct TV box. It does have HDMI and Component Out. I was thinking about putting speakers on the ceiling as well, along with Surround Sound. Still trying to figure out where to put the DTV box and how to get sound.....

The sound is produced originally from the source: the DTV box. That then gets either plugged into the TV you are using OR to the receiver to process it and distribute it to the speakers you have. You'll need 4 components:
a source for video and sound: the DTV box
an input device for video: the projector
an input device for audio: the receiver
an output for the sound from the receiver: speakers that plug into the receiver.

Projectors, most of them do not have speakers, so your best bet is to run an HDMI from the DTV box to your receiver, then run video output to the PJ and audio output to your speakers. Simple as that. If you don't want to get complex, put everything on one shelf in the garage provided you have a cable/dtv outlet and power outlets in there and you're done after mounting the PJ or placing it somewhere that works.

If you are trying to split the video signal from where you have the DTV box, that's another story.

This is a good thread on what one guy did with his garage.

Thanks a lot! Sounds simple enough. Think the hard part will be figuring out where to put all of it. You got more pics of yours and how u set it up?

Before I put the wall up where my equipment is now, I looked at every possible input on the projector and ordered all of the cable types from monoprice. Ran them in the wall, added a empty 2" PVC conduit for future runs. All this before I bought the receiver to power to projector. Turned out for me that my new receiver upconverts everything to HDMI :)

Now I have a lot of extra cable runs in my ceiling  Gonna use the second HDMI and component audio (which projectors normally don't need) and hook my Android tablet to it for music from the bar area.

About DirecTv sat cable runs (not the hdmi or composite outputs of the receivers) . You can not put a splitter on the normal non-swm cables. They are one for one between the dish or multiplexer to receiver. You will have to use an open port on the mux or dish to your new location. It is not a difficult job if you have the crimper tool. Use RG6 coax.

What has 2 thumbs and 140of mangasm? Non-T pics updated post #23 - The Perfect Man Cave (http://perfectmancave.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27153&highlight=mangasm)

This is mine, I did the screen myself with paint, have a Bose 321 hooked up to it for sound, HDMI running from the FIOS box to the pj, components to the Bose, PS3 with HDMI to the pj, and sound to the Bose. When I move in the next couple weeks I'll be redoing everything due to a different basement layout.

This is another application with the same projector

I also have that same projector. One word ... AWESOME.
Does very well in brighter light. No need to make the room completely dark to see this one.
My size is only around 114" due to a damn beam in my basement ceiling.

The lens shifting on this is amazing.

oh, and don't buy Bose. The only reason I have it is my dad got it for me a couple years ago for X-mas. As long as it works I'll use it, but there's much better quality out there at much less of a price.
