I've been following this. I think I am going to drop $35 on a toy to experiment with. Could be a pretty cool toy, or if it had a little more omph, a fully functioning playback system.

Raspberry Pi | An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte! (http://www.raspberrypi.org/)

Maximum PC | Low-Cost Raspberry Pi Board Runs XBMC And AirPlay, Doubles As A $35 1080p HTPC (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/low-cost_raspberry_pi_board_runs_xbmc_and_airplay_doub les_35_1080p_htpc)

"The soon-to-be-released Raspberry Pi stretches the definition of a PC: the ARM/Linux board is credit card-sized, capable of performing basic computing tasks, and only costs $25 (or $35 for a 256MB model, doubling the RAM of the $25 offering). Oh yeah, it plays 1080p HD video over HDMI, too. It's that last bit that brings us today's news: with the Raspberry Pi's launch looming, the team just released a video showing the board running a fully-working version of XBMC. That's right; it's a $35 1080p HTPC. Not tempting enough? It also supports AirPlay, even sans XBMC.

Of course, that price would rise a little since you'd probably want to invest in at least some sort of case, seeing as how leaving open circuit boards lying around is a recipe for disaster. The menu and transitions lag a teeny bit, but we gotta say it looks pretty good overall, especially given the price. Who needs cable when you can connect XBMC around your house for $35 bucks per television set? (We say $35 because the $25 model doesn't include an Ethernet port, only Wi-Fi support via a USB dongle.)

The video above shows off the Raspberry Pi's AirPlay capabilities.

The dev team's been very active in responding to comments in the XBMC and AirPlay blog posts, so drop them a line if you have any detailed questions. More general answers about Raspberry Pi can be found in the project's FAQ page.

Meanwhile, a Broadcom developer who helped work on the ARM chip powering the Pi says that it outperforms both Apple's iPhone processor as well as Nvidia's Tegra 2. And it plays Quake III to boot.

Do you think you'll pick one of these up when they become available? Does the XBMC and AirPlay support increase the odds of your doing so?"

I've been following this. They expect to ship at the end of February. Sam Nazarko - the genius who brought us Crystalbuntu/XBMC for 1st gen aTVs - has already cobbled together a Linux/XBMC setup for the Raspberry Pi's. Check it out at Raspbmc (http://www.raspbmc.com/).

BUYING AND SHIPPING
When can I buy one?

We are hoping to have the Raspberry Pi available to order at the end of February 2012. The initial production run will be 10 000 uncased development-style boards with further productions runs starting once these have been sold.
Where can I buy one?

The Raspi will initially only be available to purchase through raspberrypi.com –if you sign up to the mailing list on the front page you’ll be notified as soon as we’re ready to start shipping.
How many can I buy in one go?

For the first batch we are limiting orders to one per person. This restriction will be relaxed as production gets in to full swing, and we can be sure of getting boards to all who want them.

And for those that order it, understand it comes in a box, with nothing else.
No power supply, no case, etc. *JUST* The board.

So, you'll need a PS. EZPZ. And you'll need a case.
Newark sells cases, as do people like amazon or mcmaster carr

The Raspberry Pi measures 85.60mm x 53.98mm x 17mm, with a little overlap for the SD card and connectors which project over the edges. It weighs 45g.

I got on Live Chat with them and got it sorted out. Because I "allowed backorder" and had the RPi and a power adapter in my order, I got nailed with 2 shipping charges because it would come in 2 shipments. (The adapter is in stock, the RPi is not.)

The customer service guy changed my order to "ship when complete" and it changed the shipping charge.

I think my ship date is estimated at June 13!

There ya go. Figured it was something they could fix. I thought about getting the starter pack but didn't because I wanted it now and the starter pack showed back ordered when I placed my order. Ill Prolog pick up a ps somewhere and I have a case that I can use for it.

The upside is that xbmc developers have a little time while these are ln back order to sort out any build issues with the xbmc Linux build.

I wanna keep an eye on this. Sounds like this thing could be used as a STB for all the TVs in my house to hook up to the server and stream video from that, yes?

I've been looking for something to do that but that won't break the bank. Seems like most of the STBs will stream from the 'net, but not from the home network. I'd like both, actually.

Manufacturing problem is being rectified. That's why shipments are delayed.

Maximum PC | Low Cost Raspberry Pi Hits "Manufacturing Hiccup" (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/low_cost_raspberry_pi_hits_manufacturing_hiccup)

"Baking a $35 Raspberry Pi sounds like an easy recipe, but when you mix up the ingredients, the result is a sour system that should't be served to the masses. That's what happened to the first batch of Raspberry Pi devices. The cooks responsible for putting together Raspberry Pi systems inadvertently baked in the wrong type of Ethernet jacks, a minor "manufacturing hiccup" that could delay the shipment of some units.

"As you’ll have noticed, there’s been a bit of a delay in shipping the first batch of Raspberry Pis out to people. This is because of a hardware parts substitution that was made in the factory by accident: specifically, where we’d specified jacks with integrated magnetics in the BOM and schematics, the factory soldered in non-magnetic jacks," the Raspberry Pi team stated in a blog post. "No magnetics means no network connection. We’ve known about this for four days now, but we haven’t been able to tell you about it because it meant we had to do some further tests to make sure that nothing else was affected."

Things aren't as bad as they could be. The Raspberry Pi team said it's a "very minor problem to fix" and that the factory making these things is nearly finished ripping out the non-magnetic Ethernet jacks and replacing them with the correct ones on the first set of boards. The Raspberry Pi Foundation expects the first batch to still ship out as scheduled, though later batches may suffer a "slight delay" if the company runs into trouble sourcing magnetic jacks."

I think Paul Lilly who wrote that article should be fired or at least fined for using that awful baking metaphor.

Cause I might right something I have here, or make my own with some plastic scraps I have and incorporate the power supply in the same box.
And I want to see exactly how far offset the plugs are and if they'll protrude outside of the case or not, depending on what's available.

Dear Valued Customer,
In recent days there has been a lot of communication about Raspberry Pi, the need for compliance testing and the impact of testing on deliveries.
We recognize the impact on our customers of the constantly changing delivery dates and apologize for the frustration and disappointment this is causing. We commit to advise everyone of accurate delivery dates just as soon as we can but right now, as the Boards undergo compliance testing we are unable to give specific dates.
It is clear that many of the customers who have placed orders with us will be using the Raspberry Pi as a finished product and not just an engineering development board. As such, we see it as the most responsible approach to ensure that all Pi's meet the required standards for finished products in all territories. We are therefore going through a very accelerated compliance process, working closely with the Raspberry Pi foundation and RS Components. We take our commitment and responsibility in this area very seriously and believe the short-term delays, whilst frustrating will be worthwhile to ensure our customers receive a fully compliant product.
The current situation is:
2000 Raspberry Pi's are now in the UK, pictures of them leaving the factory in China posted here Raspberry Pi | An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte! (http://www.raspberrypi.org) for anyone who doubts their existence!
The compliance teams of element14, RS and Raspberry Pi are working round the clock with the testing houses to assess the product now. Any issues that are identified (hardware or software) will then need to be rectified and we will ensure this happens as quickly as is humanly possible. There are different compliance standards around the globe and we are focused on meeting all of those as quickly as possible, some may take longer than others.
As soon as these initial 2000 Boards are compliant to at least one set of required standards we will receive our share of this first batch from Raspberry Pi and ship these to customers in the locations where the compliance standards have demonstrably been met on a strictly first come, first served basis ....so those who ordered first in those countries will receive the product first.
Regrettably we cannot give any firm delivery commitments on Raspberry Pi's until this testing is complete. Please be assured we will provide this information as soon as we can.
Once the product is fully compliant our manufacturing partners have the necessary stocks of components to ramp up production very quickly, so despite these frustrating, initial delays we are confident the picture will improve and lead times for new orders will reduce.
Our commitment to our customers is to email each customer individually to confirm their personal delivery date as soon as we are able. We will continue to share generic information, but recognize that it is the detailed specific information related to individual orders that people want.
We will continue to post news and updates on our element14 community, and next week, on April 4th, Raspberry Pi founder, Eben Upton will give a 40 minute webinar on programming the Raspberry Pi as part of our element14 Design Flow series. Click here to join the 2000+ Pi fans who have already registered to attend and learn more
Orders placed on Newark element14
We'd like to apologize to all customers who placed orders with Newark element14 and have seen their acknowledged delivery date suddenly change on our website's order backlog to August 2012.
At present, as already communicated by Raspberry Pi, all deliveries are on hold awaiting the outcome of the compliance testing currently taking place. To avoid misleading people while the compliance testing takes place, our system auto-generated the August date, which has clearly caused confusion.
We're sorry!
We can absolutely commit that our orders will be shipped in the order they were originally received and that no-one has lost their place in line as a result of this latest change. Once the compliance testing is complete we will then have a clearer idea about our future deliveries and we will confirm accurate delivery dates to our many thousands of customers.
Once again we apologize to all of our customers for this delay in providing the Raspberry Pi's they so desperately want. Hopefully these initial troubles will improve the overall experience in the long run.
HOT OFF THE PRESS UPDATE FROM EBEN UPTON OF RASPBERRY PI EARLIER TODAY:
"We have spoken with BIS this morning, and have been told that, given the volumes involved and the demographic mix of likely users, the development board exemption is not applicable to us; as a result, even the first uncased developer units of Raspberry Pi will require a CE mark prior to distribution in the EU...... ....we are working with RS Components and element14/Premier Farnell to bring Raspberry Pi into a compliant state as soon as is humanly possible."
Sincerely,

Your team at Newark element14
