A local sign shop can usually do it for you. Just ask them for plexi or lexan strips which will be backlit. They'll sometimes even cut it into strips for you.
So I did find a local sign shop and they gave me a piece of acrylic "scrap" (for free) that is 5' x 2', which should easily give me 4 strips 2 inches tall by 5 feet long, which should be enough with lots to spare in case I screw up while cutting it. I have a 200 tooth 10" table saw blade which I hope will cut it pretty clean.
Thanks for the sign shop idea.
Any advice on cutting / bending? It is flexible enough that I could almost just bend it into place without any heat, but it would probably be just enough to risk breaking it.
Huge array of different types of acrylic....different thicknesses and levels of light transparency....and they will cut it to your exact dimension.
And their prices are fantastic.
I went to a Fast Signs and they wanted a ridiculous amount of money in comparison.
